Custom Audiophile System

$0.00

This living room belongs to a good friend and longtime collaborator who happens to have a serious appreciation for music — and, fortunately for me, a willingness to let me build things for it.

The system brings together a collection of custom pieces, some designed specifically around his equipment and others developed as Maughan Made pieces in their own right.

At the far left is a Sapele stereo cabinet, previously featured as a standalone piece, housing the turntable, preamp and a small vinyl collection. The turntable itself sits on a custom to the unit plinth, which in turn rests on a second isolation plinth fitted with acoustic feet.

A solid-wood and acrylic cover protects the turntable when not in use. The cover features castle joints at the corners, integrated handles, and built-in clearance for the cables at the back. When removed, it can be placed on a custom wall-mounted shelf above the turntable — doubling as a place to set the cover while changing records and a way to display the album artwork while listening.

The speakers sit on custom Padauk and maple stands, designed to resemble brick columns. The stands are filled with sand for additional mass and vibration damping, helping keep unwanted resonance out of the system.

At the centre is a Padauk equipment stand built to display and support the amplifiers and music streamer, with an acoustic panel and matching wall shelf above.

Almost everything in the room, with the exception of the Sapele cabinet, is made from Padauk. Some pieces were designed specifically around my friend's equipment and ideas; others started as Maughan Made designs.

A collection of furniture, acoustic treatment and audio accessories built around one very good reason: listening to music.
